Good question.

If you mean a class that promises to turn a beginner who's never studied a day of formal Arabic in their life into a person qualified to do tafsir independently, all by attending weekend only classes for a couple of years, then such a course does not exist. It's a pipe dream. A scam. It's rationally incoherent and literally impossible.

And here's why.

This is because independently being able to do tafsir requires a great deal of mastery in numerous disciplines especially the Arabic sciences of Nahw (grammar), Sarf (morphology) and Balagha (rhetoric).

So naturally, if such a course existed, it can only start AFTER one has already mastered the Arabic sciences (is no longer a beginner) and thus can never rightfully be called a beginners course. So there is no beginners' tafsir course in the sense I just described. It does not and cannot exist.

So what we're really talking about here is a class wherein a beginner can attend and understand what the teacher is presenting.

This in fact is possible. Because in this scenario the student does not need to have a high level of mastery themselves. All they need is some basic understanding of the parts of speech, frequently used phrases, grammatical structures, the two types of sentences, the major verbs and the majority of the possible ways the noun (ism) can be used. All topics that I normally cover within 4 or so videos.

Mastery is still required. Either the teacher needs to have it or the authors of the source books the teacher is drawing from. I've been doing this for 18+ years but I don't claim for myself this level of mastery either.

So that leaves us with our final option. Imam al-Aloosi, al-Baydhawi, Ibn Kathir, as-Suyooti, Abus Saood and Zamakhshari, etc.

Were these and other tafsir scholars like them masters? Of course they were. So accessing and benefiting from their books is now our sole solution.

Now, here's where the dilemma lies. Those source books themselves are incredibly complicated!

Someone needs to study them! So either you can study the full 10 or so years it takes to attain proper independence and then access the books yourself. Or you can join this tafsir class.
